Plastic Extrusion: How Does It Work?
Plastic extrusion is a highly efficient manufacturing process used to produce continuous profiles such as tubes, conduits and custom shapes. The process begins when plastic granules, pellets or powder are fed into a heated extrusion machine. Inside the machine, the plastic material is heated while a rotating screw pushes it forward. The combination of heat and friction from the screw melts the plastic and blends it thoroughly into a uniform, molten mass.
Once the material reaches the correct melt temperature, it is forced through a precision-engineered die that gives the profile its desired shape. The extruded plastic is then rapidly cooled, typically with air or water, so that the material solidifies and retains its form.
This process offers excellent control over material properties, allowing consistent quality and high production volumes. It is therefore particularly well suited to a broad range of products.
Below is an illustration of a typical plastic extrusion line.
Extruder – The cylinder-zone-controlled electric heating elements and the screw melt the plastic raw material into a homogeneous mass at approximately 110 to 260 degrees Celsius.
Mono-, Co- or Tri-layer – At this stage, multiple processes can be integrated to optimise the production process, simplify post processing and assembly, and ensure sealing integrity. This can take the form of co-, tri- or quad-extrusion, or a process in which two operations are combined into one.
Calibration – The calibrator cools the profile and gives it its final dimensions using vacuum combined with water or air cooling.
Inline Add-on – The profile can be marked or printed during the process.
Haul-off Unit – Two synchronously running, opposing caterpillar tracks keep the process moving continuously. During this stage, an inkjet marking is applied to the profile to ensure production data and full traceability of the finished product.
Inline Packaging – The profile can be milled, drilled, punched or stamped inline. Where required, seals or adhesive tapes can also be applied inline. These are the integrated operations.
Cut-off Unit – The profile is cut to the required length inline. The cutting method is selected based on the profile geometry and the base material used. Products are then packaged according to specification.
